Event Details

Join us for our third annual Greece Reads author visit with Etaf Rum, author of "A Woman is No Man". The New York Times bestseller and Read with Jenna TODAY SHOW Book Club pick telling the story of three generations of Palestinian-American women struggling to express their individual desires within the confines of their Arab culture in the wake of shocking intimate violence in their community.
A Woman Is No Man is a dual story of two women tied by blood. Isra is a young mother who finds herself in an abusive arranged marriage far from her home country, Palestine. Years later, Deya, her daughter, is a teenager growing up in modern-day Brooklyn. Though their upbringings differ, Deya finds herself facing the same life her mother, who died under murky circumstances, was forced to endure: an arranged marriage to a stranger and a life devoid of her own ambitions.  Rum's story of Palestinian women in Brooklyn gives us a view into a world seldom seen.  It gives us a perspective on womanhood, and the many constraints faced by women in different cultures.

Etaf will sign copies of your book (books will be available to purchase for $15, cash only), and answer questions about her novel.  In conjunction with this event, we will be accepting donations to "stock the shelves" for Willow, a domestic violence resource center in Rochester.  Find the list of needed items here:  https://willowcenterny.org/make-a-difference/wish-list/
